The Mozilla Foundation announced this weekend that it now accepts donations in Dogecoin (DOGE). What to arouse the ire of the co-founder of the project, Jamie Zawinski, who did not go dead hand in his criticism of cryptocurrencies.

Mozilla now accepts Dogecoin (DOGE)

Contrary to what Zawinski’s post might suggest, Mozilla has been accepting crypto donations for a long time – since 2014 to be exact. As Mozilla’s tweet explains , these are supported by BitPay .

In addition to DOGE, donors can send Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ether, Litecoin, XRP, and even Shiba Inu , although the Foundation has been quiet about this. It is noted that the use of BitPay allows Mozilla to receive funds in fiat currency, the exchange being managed by the service provider.

Mozilla co-founder steps up to the plate

Mozilla’s announcement regarding Dogecoin was not to the liking of the open source community, which expressed its dissatisfaction on Twitter . In particular Jamie Zawinski, the co-founder of Mozilla.org, who left the project in 1999.

According to him, accepting cryptocurrency is completely antithetical to the ideals defended by Mozilla:

”  Everyone involved in the project should die of shame regarding the decision to partner with Ponzi scam that incinerate the planet .  “

We will briefly pass on the accusation of scam and Ponzi, the attack being unrealistic. Regarding the ecological consequences of cryptocurrencies, the criticisms have indeed become more and more noticeable in recent months.

It is difficult to bring up the subject in a peaceful manner, the pro and anti systematically tearing each other apart over the different interpretations. What we do know is that the ecological cost of the Bitcoin network (BTC) , and of Proof of Work in general, is very poorly understood by the general public .

It should also be noted that the ideals defended by the open source community and the crypto community often come together, as well as the methods used by the working groups to organize themselves. So it’s interesting that the two can clash so sharply.
